For Nonprofits Seeking Board Members

The United Way of New York City (UWNYC) believes that high functioning or "healthy" boards are key assets for building organizational capacity. Healthy boards enable organizations to respond strategically to new challenges and to garner the human & financial resources needed to strengthen, stabilize and sustain their organizations. This is why UWNYC is committed to strengthening the capacity of our grantee and program partners.

Who We Serve

Organizations receiving funding for providing services in one or more of UWNYC’s three impact areas: Health/Nutrition, Education & Income or organizations serving one of UWNYC’s ten targeted neighborhoods and working towards greater improved health, nutrition, education and income stability:

  • Mott Haven
  • Hunts Point
  • Central Harlem
  • East Harlem
  • Corona/Elmhurst
  • Rockaways
  • Brownsville
  • East New York
  • Coney Island
  • St. George/Stapleton

Eligibility

UWNYC grantees and program partners looking for change makers or the chance to diversify their boards stand to benefit the most from BoardServeNYC. Additionally, all applicants to BoardServeNYC must meet the following qualifications:

  • Has identified a need for assistance in these areas: compliance, governance, fiduciary, strategic planning, adding new board members
  • Able to commit two lead members of the organization (Board Chair, Executive Director, Trustee, etc.) to a three-hour training
  • Has at least four board members
  • Has operated robust programming for at least three years
  • Has a budget of at least $200,000 and one full-time staff member
  • Can provide financial statements for two previous years

Here’s how to get started:

  • Apply: Submit the BoardServeNYC online application.
  • Attend Training: Once your organization has been notified of acceptance into BoardServeNYC, you will be provided with upcoming dates for a 3-hour BoardServeNYC "Nonprofit Board Recruitment Orientation." The training session provides an overview of the roles and responsibilities of nonprofit boards and prepares organizations to identify new board members.
  • Create a Profile and Access Matching Portal: After you complete your orientation, your organization will be invited to create an online profile which will facilitate matching. Matches are based on compatibility between individuals and organizations taking into account criteria such as mission, client population served, skills, time requirements, and geographic location.
