While much attention is spent on helping boards strengthen their governance, lackluster board performance may also be the result of inadequate board members. Jim Collins, author of the bestselling book Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap and Others Don’t says “getting the right people on the bus” is the best predictor of future success. Where do nonprofits find the best board members? What is the best course of action to recruit the busiest and brightest to join a board?
Nonprofit leaders need a strategy to find and keep board members who care about the cause, have the needed or missing skills, understand their role, and can commit time and resources. All too often, charities settle for two or three of these desired qualities. This workshop will review key strategies around board recruitment and board member retention. It will deconstruct the process needed to build an effective leadership team that can work together to fulfill a collective set of responsibilities and help the nonprofit achieve its mission.
In this workshop, participants will learn:
- How to assess your current board members
- Qualities to look for in board candidates
- Board practices that bring out the best in board members
- The seven essentials for board recruitment
- How to orient and engage new board members
This workshop is best suited for:
• Executive directors
• Board members
• Development staff
