Managing risk is part of every nonprofit leader’s job.   Rapid change, pressure to grow or shrink, financial challenges, compliance with government mandates and a myriad of safety concerns are among the risks that nonprofit leaders face.

This half-day session will help nonprofit leaders to engage their entire organization in managing risk using positive framing that demonstrates that risk management makes nonprofits stronger, healthier and better able to meet their mission.  Using this approach and various tools and examples, we will walk through the step-by-step process of identifying, evaluating, prioritizing and responding to risks, including making strategic choices that build infrastructure and systems.   We will also explore the importance of risk taking in order to innovate and remain relevant.

By taking this workshop, participants will:

  • Gain a clear, positive framework for managing risk that can be integrated into their nonprofit’s culture and systems
  • Learn how to use risk assessment tools effectively and spot common “business-critical” and “operational” risks
  • Practice how to evaluate and prioritize risks to avoid becoming overwhelmed
  • Explore four core strategies for responding to risk and the “secret sauce” that comes with having a responsive, forward looking culture
  • Be ready to choose among 3 common paths to expand risk management at their nonprofit

This workshop is best suited for:
  • Nonprofit executives and senior team members
  • Board members who provide oversight and guidance on organizational risks
  • Departmental managers who are actively engaged in managing risks
