On April 20, Laura Colin Klein, Executive Director of charitySTRONG, and Luana Lewis, Senior Vice President-Programs and ServicesBetter Business Bureau Serving Metropolitan New York, facilitated the first in a series of training sessions on nonprofit governance sponsored by NYC Service’s Nonprofit Board Development Coalition. “The session focused on the fiduciary responsibilities of individual board members and the roles and responsibilities of the board,” noted Klein. “Fiduciary is not a term that gets used a lot in every day conversation, so we wanted to clarify any confusion. We know that there are even some long-time board members out there who never really understood what the term means.” “Too often, board members are afraid to ask basic questions,” added Lewis. “We hope that this session and the Good Governance Blueprint will help nonprofit leaders address concerns about their boards and implement best practices.”
In May 2016, NYC Service’s Nonprofit Board Development Coalition, a group of 20 City agencies and nonprofit organizations, issued the Good Governance Blueprint – a comprehensive set of resources and tools for nonprofit executive directors and board members. Nonprofit organizations are critical to the health of New York City. The Blueprint is there to help leaders ensure that their organizations are operating legally, ethically and to their fullest potential.
